Business Management Network July 2014

The Network talked about how important it is to be able to come together and get to know one another as well as have the opportunity to discuss common issues. Members agreed they they each get out of being part of the Network what they put into it. It was noted that others can also be involved and that Members should let contacts know the opportunity is open to anyone whose responsibilities align with functions such as financial management, administration services, capital works programs, investment and business case development, strategic performance and other business capability issues.

Getting down to business the Network strategised about the forthcoming review of the MOU for fire protection of Commonwealth property under the Commonwealth Agreement. Conrad Barr from ACT Emergency Services Agency came along to the meeting to explain the difficulties the ACT are currently having with their arrangements and to seek advice from the Group.

The BMN also evaluated the current status of the ACNC and the potential abolition of the agency as proposed by the federal government. Whilst business as usual continues for ACNC agencies were keen to ensure they complied with the legislation. The material that WA had previously shared with the Network proved very valuable and saved duplication of effort by others. The BMN will keep a watching brief on what happens from here and if changes occur, they will then assess the effect these have for all agencies.

In terms of key industry business data, the Network is going to keep the Understanding our Business catalogue and hopefully expand it to include additional AFAC agencies. The data captured in this catalogue is very useful for things like treasury reviews, comparisons between agencies, an induction tool for new staff members, and attaining a broader industry understanding.  The catalogue will be refined and progressively enhanced, with reports from the data prepared and published periodically.

The next time the Network comes together will be via teleconference on 25 September 2014. If you would like to know more or wish to get involved, please contact Jill Edwards, Director, Capability and Member Services via email.
