This is a newly created ongoing role within the Zone Operations Team in each Zone. This role will be responsible for supporting all functions relating to operational response, pre-incident planning and operational capability to appropriately respond to flood rescues and the other combat roles of the NSW SES. The role will focus on increasing flood rescue incident management capability and capacity through the facilitation of training, exercising, and skills maintenance activities while contributing to the development of pre-incident plans and the implementing of procedures, analysing flood rescue risk and liaising with support agencies to ensure strategic coordination of flood rescues and operational response functions. This role will be required to participate in on call rosters or shifts based on predicted impacts to mitigate risk posed by weather forecasts, support activities or operational response deployments to assure the operational readiness and response capability of the NSW SES. There may be some travel associated with the role to support operations across NSW.
As an Operational Officer Level 2 (OpO 2), you will play a key role in delivering frontline services that protect Far West communities from bush fires and other emergencies. Working as part of a small, highly connected district team, this role sits at the centre of operations - supporting volunteers, staff, and partner agencies to ensure the district is prepared, capable, and ready to respond when it matters most. The OpO 2 contributes to the implementation of district and state strategies, operational procedures, and service standards that strengthen community safety, reduce risk, and enhance resilience. You will provide practical, timely advice and solutions in a fast-paced emergency service environment, where reliability, sound judgement, and collaboration are critical. The role also supports essential corporate and operational systems, risk reduction initiatives, and community preparedness activities that underpin effective service delivery across the district. The Far West Team operates across a vast and diverse landscape, working closely with local brigades, communities, and other agencies. The team values professionalism, initiative, and a strong understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of working in a volunteer-based emergency service. This is a role that offers meaningful, varied work, strong community connection, and the opportunity to make a genuine impact while being part of a supportive, purpose-driven organisation committed to protecting people, property, and the environment.
