Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) along with ACT Fire & Rescue Service are at the forefront of sustainability in emergency services, pioneering efforts to reduce carbon emissions from operational vehicles. This presentation will showcase FRV and Vancouver Fire and Rescue Service’s (VFRS) initiation and development of the Zero Emissions Operational Network (ZEON), an international initiative uniting fire services across the globe to explore and implement zero-emission technologies. ZEON fosters knowledge sharing, research, and development among fire agencies committed to reducing their environmental footprint while maintaining operational excellence.

A key focus of the presentation will be FRV’s groundbreaking introduction of Victoria’s first electric pumper, currently undergoing an extensive trial. Attendees will gain insights into the structured process and pathway FRV has undertaken to bring this pioneering vehicle into service. From initial concept and design to the development of a tailored evaluation framework, this initiative exemplifies a strategic and thorough approach to innovation.

Additionally, the presentation will highlight the comprehensive training program developed and delivered to operational crews and support staff. This program ensures that personnel are fully equipped to operate and maintain the electric pumper, while also fostering a culture of adaptability and environmental stewardship within the organisation. By sharing its journey, challenges, and successes, FRV aims to inspire other fire services to embark on their own pathways toward zero-emission fleets.
