Exposure to bushfire smoke is a potential hazard for fire, land management and emergency service workers, including volunteers, and all personnel, e.g. machinery operators and others who work on or near the fire ground (hereafter referred to as ‘workers’).

This AFAC safe work guideline Managing Bushfire Smoke Exposure has been developed to assist firefighting, land management and emergency service organisations to develop consistent, yet organisationally specific, procedures and practices to mitigate the risks posed by bushfire smoke exposure.

This document should be read in conjunction with the related AFAC Doctrine, AFAC Framework for Risk Management and Workplace Health and Safety for Emergency Responders (AFAC 2022) and Selection of Appropriate Respiratory Protective Devices (RPD) During Bushfires (2021).
