An Explanation of Fire Weather District Ratings Calculations

Last updated28 May 2026

The Australian Fire Danger Rating System (AFDRS) provides a consistent, science-based approach to understanding and predicting fire behaviour across diverse landscapes.

Fire Danger Ratings are calculated using the Fire Behaviour Index (FBI), which assesses conditions across a Fire Weather District by analysing weather, fuel type, and landscape information at a detailed grid level. The overall district rating reflects widespread conditions using a 90th percentile method, ensuring it represents the areas of highest risk rather than isolated extremes. This approach supports informed decision-making for communities, emergency services, and land managers by providing a reliable picture of fire risk while highlighting that local variations and elevated conditions can still occur.
