AFDRS Key Messages
Key messages about the Australian Fire Danger Rating System.
The new Australian Fire Danger Rating System was introduced in September 2022 and means that no matter which state or territory you live in, work in, or travel to, the Fire Danger Ratings will be communicated in the same way.
Fire Danger Ratings tell you how dangerous a fire could be if one started. The higher the rating the more dangerous the conditions.
Fire Danger Ratings are important to help you decide what actions to take to protect yourself in case of a dangerous fire in your area.
Fire Danger Ratings are issued according to Fire Weather Districts. They are forecast out to four days in advance to allow you to plan your activities.
Each fire danger rating has clear messages, including what action you should take for you and others to stay safe. The rating is your trigger to act.
The AFDRS is different to the Australian Warning System (AWS). Fire Danger Ratings tells us how dangerous a fire could be if one started. The Australian Warning System tells us about an emergency that is happening now. Specific communities are given a warning when required.
