This procedural guideline expresses AFAC's guidance related to smoke alarms installed in domestic and residential accommodation including homes, apartments, units, flats, holiday accommodation and mobile homes in Australia and New Zealand.

This guideline is based on smoke alarm performance, research, industry knowledge and emerging technology. The guidance may change following further research into the performance of smoke alarms in the Australian and New Zealand context.

AFAC encourages further research into the performance of smoke detection devices in the Australian and New Zealand residential environment and supports the need for ongoing review, development and testing through the Australian Standards review process.
