Rural Firefighting Vehicles Burn Over Protection

July 22, 2021, by AFAC Fleet Technical Group | v 2.0 The principles outlined in this guideline apply to any firefighting vehicle owned or operated by an Australian AFAC Member agency that is used to directly combat bushfires. Vehicles used in support of bushfire fighting operations, e.g. urban firefighting vehicles, command, logistics, incident control or bulk water carrier type vehicles, and those firefighting vehicles used by New Zealand fire services are out of scope, but the same principles may be applied to them as the requirements to maintain as safe a work environment as so far as is reasonably practicable.

Our Guideline

(See full document attached below)

AFAC Member agencies recognise and acknowledge the risks posed to firefighters involved in combating bushfires. A significant threat to firefighter safety occurs when a firefighting vehicle is burnt over during firefighting operations.

This guideline details the principles that should be considered by AFAC Member agencies to underpin the risk management approach taken when specifying vehicle safety features that are designed to maximise crew safety and survivability during burn-over events.
