(see full document attached below)
The arrival of European settlement in Australia saw the beginning of an uneasy relationship between people and fire in the landscape. Over the years many have lost their lives and homes, businesses and community infrastructure have been destroyed and the ecosystem damaged by intense bushfire.
The purpose of this document is to articulate a national position on actions that should be considered by AFAC member agencies in their efforts to protect people and their property from bushfire.
The guidance offered in this position is based on substantial research and extensive experience. Our member agencies’ understanding of bushfire behaviour is well developed and is based on sound evidence gathered by emergency service practitioners and fire behaviour scientists, both in Australia and around the world.
