AFAC is Australia and New Zealand’s National Council for fire and emergency Services and represents 34-member organisations who are totalling over 288,000 firefighters and emergency services workers.

AFAC seeks to amplify the collective capability and capacity of emergency management organisations, support them to work together to achieve better outcomes for the sector, and the communities they serve.

AFAC does this through an extensive and mature collaboration network, developing national doctrine or ways of working, and delivering project or grant-based work including professional services, software applications, aircraft contract management, cross border deployment of emergency services personnel and other nationally significant activities such as the delivery the national conference and National Emergency Services Memorial ceremony.

AFAC is also the managing partner of the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR). AIDR is the National Institute for disaster risk reduction and resilience and collaborates across sectors to strengthen the resilience of Australian communities to disasters.

About the position

We are seeking a Web Developer to join AFAC on a 12-month fixed term contract.

This role plays a critical part in the delivery of AFAC’s Web Transformation Project, ensuring the timely delivery of high-quality web solutions. The position will be responsible for creating and configuring multiple new sites across the AFAC brand, migrating content, and ensuring best practice design, structure, performance, security, SEO, and accessibility.

In addition, the role will provide content management training and guidance to stakeholders, contribute to process documentation, and assist with other digital projects and technology implementations as required.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with AFAC’s chosen vendor to create and configure new sites across the AFAC brand, including enhancements to the Member Portal.
  • Ensure best practices in site architecture, UX, security, SEO, and accessibility.
  • Manage and execute content migration, including templates, metadata, tagging, and search optimisation.
  • Conduct testing, ensure functionality, and obtain stakeholder sign-off before go-live.
  • Provide training, support, and user guides to content managers and stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement during project delivery and provide regular updates to the Project Manager.
  • Comply with AFAC policies, procedures, and relevant regulations.

About you

You are an experienced web professional with a strong technical background, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Essential skills and experience include:

  • Demonstrated website development and content management experience using a CMS.
  • Proven ability to plan and execute content migration projects.
  • Strong knowledge of accessibility, usability, responsive design, and UX principles.
  • Experience with SEO and Google Analytics.
  • Ability to work across a variety of website platforms.
  • End-to-end project experience, from discovery through to delivery.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Agile and Waterfall project methodologies.
