A Standard is a published document which sets out specifications and procedures designed to ensure that a material, product, method or service is fit for its purpose and consistently performs in the way it was intended.” – Standards Australia

In the fire and emergency service industry there are standards for a wide range of products. From smoke alarms, fire extinguishes and fire fighter’s personal protective equipment through to emergency evacuation procedures and construction of bushfire zones.

Compliance to a relevant Standard can only be guaranteed if the product has been certified by an independent certification body and that product carries that company certification mark.

AFAC is a leading advocate of the development and revision of fire-related standards among Australasian fire agencies. AFAC representatives play a leading role on a large number of Australian and International Standards Committees.

In September 2005, AFAC signed a wide-ranging, three-year Memorandum of Understanding with Standards Australia.  The Memorandum provides a basis for mutual co-operation between the two organisations in the development of standards relating to the management of fire related risks, fire protection and fire safety.

It includes, but is not limited to:

  • Standards for firefighter personal protective equipment
  • Fire protection systems and equipment
  • Fire safety systems and equipment
  • The storage, transportation and handling of dangerous goods/hazardous materials.

The process by which AFAC contributes to the Standard development process is outlined in this relationship diagram.  Copies of all Australian standards can be purchased through the SAI Global Webshop.
