The Urban Operations Group is made up of senior officers of fire agencies with significant levels of responsibilities across a variety of urban locations. The Group is tasked with reviewing emergency management issues pertaining to the urban environment, particularly relating to operational management matters of national importance, and developing effective strategies to address those issues.
Due to the broad and specialised issues that influence urban fire services, the AFAC Urban Group is supported by several work groups that report directly to it.
Hazardous Materials Work Group
Provides guidance to fire services in the use and improvement of best practices for Hazmat and CBR risk management in the areas of Prevention, Preparedness, Response and Recovery (PPRR).
Urban Search and Rescue Working Group
Assists fire services to implement an effective, structured, robust, interoperable, multi-agency capability for preparation, response and recovery from local, interstate and international structural collapse emergencies and from disasters requiring Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) response.
Unwanted False Alarm Reduction Committee
Works towards reducing complacency towards fire alarm systems, creating public confidence in fire alarm systems and reducing the associated disruption and losses for business.
Environmental Management Group
Assists AFAC member agencies to work towards best practice in environmental care in all aspects of their business (prevention, preparedness, response and recovery from emergencies) and in infrastructure and support. The Group develops and promotes a strategic approach to environmental management by gaining the support of the community and environmental regulators for AFAC member agencies initiatives.
Changing Vehicle Technology Project Group
Assists AFAC member agencies to work towards safe best practice when responding to incidents involving motor vehicles. The Group identifies changing technology and its impact on delivery of existing services and the development of a strategic approach to managing issues through engagement with AFAC agencies.
