The Knowledge Management Group drives strategies that lead to greater integration and sharing of information to support the development of evidence-based decision-making together with the development of a broader knowledge management capacity and culture within member agencies.

Known as the KMG, its members comprise senior personnel who have responsibility for their organisations corporate knowledge, arrangements for the management of information and for establishing a knowledge management culture.

The KMG plays a key role in relation to a number of AFAC Goals and Objectives as outlined in its Strategic Plan 2008-2015.  Central to this is the establishment of the AFAC Knowledge Management Strategy which is pivotal to the creation of a culture that nurtures knowledge creation and evidence based decision making.

The group also plays an important roll in the ongoing development of the AFAC Knowledge Web.

The KMG has one sub-group - the Data Management Group.

The Data Management Sub-group (DMG) works to improve the capture, integration, analysis and exchange of data and information within and between member agencies to inform strategic decision-making and research initiatives.

Interest in data, information and knowledge management right across the fire and emergency services sector is rapidly growing. With this increased interest, there is commensurate pressure on agencies to think differently about their data and information. As the industry strives towards increased information interoperability the traditional view that data and information is created for a limited audience is being challenged; the creators of such data and information now need to take into account a much broader audience.
