BISI was created as the Bushfire Information Sharing Initiative in early 2007 to support agencies combating major, concurrent Australian wildfires. It provides a reporting function and information repository of incident prognosis and resources available for sharing across the AFAC membership, updated twice a day at the peak of the fire danger period. Prior to the 2008 fire season its name was changed to Bushfire Information & Significant Incidents (BISI) in recognition of its potential use in a wider variety of emergency situations.
During the fire season AFAC member agencies update reports on the BISI website. This information is then compiled into a consolidated report and distributed to members.
BISI improves the sharing of information about bushfire threat and risk in each jurisdiction and provides better information to support decisions regarding the inter-jurisdiction sharing and movement of resources, including the:
- anticipated need for resources
- planned resource movements
- observed current resource movements
- resources available for movement.
The BISI website is hosted by the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board in Victoria and reporting is coordinated through AFAC.
BISI is activated on a date determined by the members and is widely communicated.
